Corsair Notebook Upgrade Kit: Creating a Bootable USB Flash Drive

By Mike Clements posted Sep 13th 2012

The Apricorn EZ GIG IV software included with the Force Series™ 3 Notebook Upgrade Kit SSDs, or NUK, is extremely easy to use. It allows the user to create a backup or extra software disk and also to create a bootable USB flash drive from the Windows application.

Having the software on a bootable USB flash drive makes it much more portable. Also, many systems these days do not have an optical drive such as netbooks.

What's in the wattage?

By Jonny Gerow posted Sep 01st 2012

When people talk about computer power supplies, there are a lot of terms that get thrown around that we here at Corsair realize that not everyone understands. Unlike a CPU or GPU, a power supply doesn't have clock speeds. A PSU doesn't have 4MB vs. 8MB of L3 cache. A power supply doesn't have 2GB vs. 4GB of GDDR memory. So what number does everyone know when they look at a power supply box? The wattage. But, truth be told, the actual capability of one power supply can't be explained by wattage alone. One 600W power supply may not be the same as another 600W.

First, let's talk about what this "wattage" number on the box and power supply label is. The wattage of a power supply is an indication of how much DC power the power supply can put out. But a power supply only puts out as much DC power as demanded of it by the computer. And depending on what you're doing with that computer, that number can vary a great deal. Even though you have a 600W power supply, the power supply may only be putting out 300W, or even as little as 1 watt if it's just sitting in standby.

Here's the rub: that maximum wattage number comes with a number of conditions. A number of conditions that aren't always laid out on the retail box somewhere. And, as a consumer, you don't know what these conditions are unless a power supply is properly reviewed and exposed as the fraud, for the lack of a better word, that it may be.

Corsair fully discloses that the GS600 is rated at 600W, continuous, at 40°C.

SMITE with the Vengeance M90 Laser Gaming Mouse

By Robert Pearce posted Aug 29th 2012

I was recently at QUAKECON 2012 in Dallas and while I was there I noticed a lot of people playing a new MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) called SMITE. So I decided to get my very own Beta Key and give it a try. Gameplay in SMITE is challenging, fast paced, and a lot of fun!  I also found that, while they’ve done a great job laying out the keyboard, your gameplay can be greatly enhanced with the creation of a few simple macros.  The perfect venue to show off some of the capabilities of the Vengeance M90 Laser Gaming Mouse!  ;-)

Dominator Platinum 2133/2400/2666MHz Overclocking

By Jake Crimmins posted Aug 28th 2012

One of the best parts about my job at Corsair is pushing our DDR3 memory to its limits. As you may have seen in the past I set the DRAM Frequency World Record and recently pushed our new Dominator Platinum memory to 3000MHz at Computex 2012. Not everybody can overclock to 3000MHz so let’s take a look at what the 2133MHz, 2400MHz, and 2666MHz Dominator Platinum kits can achieve.

80 PLUS Platinum efficiency; What does it mean, and what's the benefit to me?

By Jonny Gerow posted Aug 23rd 2012

Efficiency is something we hear about a lot when talking about power supplies.  Today, we're going to talk about what efficiency means, how it is calculated and how having a more efficient Corsair power supply can save money on your electric bill over a lesser efficient power supply unit.

Just this past month, Corsair introduced the AX1200i Digital ATX power supply; a 1200W power supply for desktop computers with DSP (digital signal processing) and 80 Plus Platinum efficiency.  Platinum is currently the highest level of efficiency certified for desktop power supplies by the people behind 80 Plus; testing for at least 92% efficiency at 50% load.  Compared to a unit that is 80% efficient or one that is not 80 Plus certified at all that can have an efficiency as low as 60 to 70%, how much money can you save on your electric bill?
