No, you’re not hallucinating, we really have been treated to a new RuneScape game in the year of our lord 2025. However, it’s not the same kind of game you remember playing on the family PC back in 2007. No, instead this has been given the modern PC game makeover, meaning that you’ll be gathering resources, crafting tools, and building a base with up to three of your friends.
Given that the nostalgia is strong with this one, we imagine it will remain popular for a while, so, here’s the RuneScape: Dragonwilds system requirements for those who, like us, having struggled to move on.
Despite how pretty the game looks, the requirements are relatively accessible. This is nice to see, but the game is in early access, meaning that it’s far from fully optimized and as such you can expect the requirements to change over time as the game grows in scope.
Despite this, we can make some educated guesses as to what hardware would improve your experience. First up would be a new graphics card. The lighting in RuneScape: Dragonwilds looks positively sumptuous: Glowy spell effects, particle effect-heavy weapons, and sunlight streaming through the canopy to collect in puddles on the forest floor. All of which can weigh on the GPU heavily.
If you can find and afford one, a 50 Series GPU from Nvidia is a great upgrade. If that's not an option, then an AMD Radeon RX 9070 or 9070 XT is also a strong choice. A high airflow case is also recommended to keep these massive GPUs sufficiently supplied with fresh air.
While the minimum and recommended specs call for 8 GB and 16 GB of RAM, we prefer 32 GB now that it’s much more affordable. Even though this game might not need it, other games certainly will.
We mentioned this at the outset of this page, but it bears repeating once more – this game is not like the RuneScape you remember from your childhood; the gameplay experience is entirely different, closer in design to a mixture of Minecraft and Valheim.
This means you’ll be chopping down trees, gathering resources, and building bases that no doubt begin as sad wooden shacks and progress to something that looks like a skiing chalet/gaudy mansion hybrid.
Interestingly though, all this will be done with the constant threat of dragons, which appear to be the primary enemy in this game. This probably means that initially you’ll have no chance at all at fighting them and must instead run and hide, but as you level skills, craft better gear, and get setup properly, you’ll be able to finally defend yourself, your home, and your brethren.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes place in the fantasy land known as Ashenfall, which comprises multiple different regions and biomes, meaning that there will be variations in the climate and enemies, perhaps necessitating a different approach for each environment.
