James Bond games have had a chequered past, haven’t they? From the legendary nostalgia bait of GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 to the fairly forgettable entries during the seventh console generation.
Now, though, IO Interactive have been given a go and are delivering the first James Bond game in almost 15 years. However, this means nothing if your system can’t handle it. So, it’s time for the Specs, PC Specs.
Happily, IO Interactive has also given us performance aims for each set of specs, though they are a bit less detailed than we’d like. The minimum specs should get you 30 FPS at 1080p, and the recommended specs will produce 60 FPS at 1080p. Of course, many PC gamers are running 1440p (or higher) monitors these days, so hopefully we’ll get more detailed performance estimates before the May 27 release date.
It’s not a super intensive game, but it’s not lightweight, either. And given that the developers claim that the recommended specs will get you 60 FPS at 1080p, which is what we consider to the be the bare minimum, this game might end up being harder to run than the specs would have you believe.
Normally, our first port of call would be telling you to upgrade your RAM to at least 32 GB, however given the pricing at time of writing, we understand that you might be hesitant. So, if your PC is looking like it’s going to struggle, where else could you upgrade?
Well, GPU prices and availability appear to be a bit more stable these days, so if you’re still hanging on to an aging graphics card, a new one could be a good investment. One of the 90 Series from AMD or a 50 Series from Nvidia will cost you but will last a good few years.
Looking at the suggested CPUs, it also looks like 007 First Light might be a bit tough on the CPU, too, so a new 360mm AIO will be helpful. The iCUE LINK TITAN 360 RX is the best choice right now, but the NAUTILUS 360 RS is plenty capable and considerably less expensive. You might also take this opportunity to upgrade to an OLED ultrawide monitor, as 007 First Light looks like it's going to be a visual treat. the XENEON FLEX or the XENEON 34WQHD240-C are both superb options.
The James Bond franchise has always struggled to find their place in the world of gaming. Should they be third person or first person? Straight up FPS or more of a stealth thing? Should driving a sick Aston Martin be an integral part of the game?
IO Interactive are a good developer to answer these questions, as the Hitman games they’re known for are already bond-like in many ways. Those games already contained disguises, stealth, shooting, puzzles, and espionage.
All that is a solid foundation on which to build perhaps the first James Bond game that isn’t just a simple shooter. Judging by the trailer, 007 First Light looks like it’s going to be exciting enough, but a tad cerebral, too.
