Elite and professional gamers are always looking for gear that can supply them that extra edge in competitive play. In this article, we’ll be taking a look at low-friction glass mousepads, who might benefit from using them, and who might not benefit from using them.
Since we’re discussing low-friction here, it’s probably a good idea to break down what friction is, and how it will typically affect mouse movement. According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding or grinding against each other. Applying this definition to mouse movement, the friction that we care about is going to occur in two basic situations, when the mouse is being moved from a standstill, and when the mouse is gliding across the pad.
In both of these situations, having less friction will mean that you need less energy to make the movements you want. Sounds great, right? Less energy means less wear on your wrist, it means your mouse gets moving quicker, and it means less fatigue. Well, this is physics, so as always, there are gonna be trade-offs.
On the flip side, a lower friction surface means you need to expend more energy when you’re stopping the mouse and when you’re changing directions. It’s going to take some retraining to get your muscle memory recalibrated, but if you can do it, your flick shots and micro-adjustments are going to be much quicker. That extra speed could make the difference between hitting your shots and getting got.
MM GLASS LARGE and other low-friction glass mousepads are not really hybrid, multirole mouse pads. They’re primarily designed to help FPS/TPS pros and aspiring pros that are trying to maximize their performance.
MOBA players, RTS players, and fans of action RPGs that require precision aim may also find some benefit from a low-friction mousepad, but MMO gamers and office workers aren’t likely to boost their efficiency too much with a glass mouse mat.
Unlike a cloth mousepad which can develop wear spots over time in the sections where you move the mouse most, a glass mouse pad is going to stay consistent and uniform for considerably longer. Your mouse is more likely to wear out before your mouse pad. Glass mouse pads with rounded edges like the MM GLASS LARGE also won’t ever fray, so that’s one fewer obstacle on your climb to Top 500.
Are you the kind of gamer that likes to get their snack on during gaming sessions? Just be aware that you’ll feel crumbs and stray food particles much more on a glass surface than you would on a cloth mousepad. However, it’s much easier to clean and dry a glass mousepad, so once again, there are pros and cons to consider.
Low-friction mousepads aren’t for everyone, but for the right players, they’re the only choice. If you’re serious about your FPS games, you might want to give one a try and see if your skills show some clear improvement.
