Mounting your GPU vertically instead of horizontally can boost the aesthetic appeal of your PC by allowing you to show off your graphics card in all of its glory instead of just the side and the backplate. However, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns, as an extra-thick GPU might end up too being close to the side panel to allow for good airflow, but it depends on the case in question, and the GPU, but just keep that in mind if you’re considering taking your GPU vertical. Here's an article we wrote asking the question, "Is vertically mounting a GPU bad for thermals?"
Most CORSAIR cases do support vertically mounting a GPU, but not all. In this article we’ll list all the cases that support a vertical GPU mount so you can be better educated when you are looking for your next case.
A custom liquid cooling setup with the FRAME 4000D.
One important thing to keep in mind is that the vast majority, if not ALL cases that support this feature do not include the necessary hardware to mount the GPU vertically, they just support you installing it. That hardware is a PCIe riser cable with a PCIe slot adapter. The cable goes into your existing PCIe slot and then the PCIe bracket is secured to the top of the PSU shroud.
CORSAIR sells a PCIe 5.0 x16 Riser Cable that will work in any case that supports it, but some cases require a specialized bracket due to the layout of the PCI slots on the back of the case, so do your research before you take the plunge.
A PCIe riser cable acts like an extension cable of sorts and lets you mount your GPU vertically in supported cases.
This series of dual-chamber cases allows vertical GPU installation but only with a CORSAIR Vertical GPU Mount Kit that is sold seperately. The kit includes the entire assembly, which includes the rear PCI slots and slot covers, the riser cable, and the PCIe slot that installs on the floor of the case.
The 3500Xhas a rotatable PCI slot so you just need to remove three screws, rotate the entire PCI bracket, and secure the screws. You then install the standoffs onto the PSU shroud, connect the riser cable to the slot and GPU and secure the card to the case.
The FRAME 4000 Series includes a rotatable PCIe bracket that makes vertical GPU installation very simple. Like the 3500X you just unscrew the bracket, rotate it, and secure the screws. You then install the mounting screws on the PSU shroud and install the riser cable. All FRAME 4000 Series cases offer this functionality including the WOOD, LCD, 4000X, and 4500X.
Just like with the FRAME 4000D Series, the FRAME 5000D includes a rotatable PCIe bracket so you just unscrew it, rotate it, and then secure it. Next you install the standoffs included with your riser cable on the PSU shroud and install the PCIe riser card.
The updated 5000T in all its variants includes a rotatable PCI slot, like most modern CORSAIR cases, so you just unscrew it, rotate it, and secure it. You then install standoffs on the PSU shroud, connect the PCIe cable, and secure the card to the slot and to the case.
The dual-chamber 6500 Series supports vertical GPU mounting with a CORSAIR Vertical GPU Mount Kit that is sold separately. Like with the 2500 Series, the kit includes everything you need including the PCIe slots and slot covers, a PCIe 4.0 riser cable, and the PCIe slot that is secured on the bottom of the chassis. The kit is compatible with the 6500X and the 6500D.
The 7000 Series came out a few years before the FRAME Series so it features a slightly older design that is not rotatable. Instead, the rear of the case includes both vertical and horizontal slots side-by-side. There are three vertical slots to the left of the horizontal slots, so you can only use a GPU that is three-slots wide, which was a gigantic GPU when this case launched in 2021.
Back then even the biggest GPUs, like the RTX 3080, were still dual-slot. Regardless, it does support vertical mounting but given the proximity to the side panel it’s probably best to stick with a water block or a dual-slot GPU, as a three-slot card would be right next to the side panel with little ability to draw cool air into the card.
It probably won’t surprise you to learn a case that is big enough to house a family of badgers supports a vertical GPU mount, but yes, the 9000D does support it and it includes a vertical bracket too, so all you need is a riser cable (sold separately).
To install it you just need to swap the PCI brackets, secure the standoffs on the PSU shroud, and install the riser card.
