AMD Ryzen Threadripper vs. Threadripper Pro: What's the Difference?

We’ve written a few articles on the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series so far, from an overview article about the 9970X and the 9980X, and an article that directly compares the two.

With these products, it is important to know what this enthusiast to workstation level CPU series is good for. Now, it's time to figure out what makes the Pro version different from the base version.

Difference in Specs

For specs, we will compare the highest-level models including the 9980X and the 9995WX Pro.

As is shown in the table, these Pro models are another level of power, even compared to the 9000 non-pro series that has already shown impressive stats.

Differences Explained

Along with the steep price increase for the flagship AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX at $11,700, there comes tons of benefits to this CPU, including the higher core/thread counts and larger cache size.

In simple terms and generally, more cores and threads correlate to having more multitasking and a higher overall performance. Cache size, on the other hand is important for accessing and transferring data within the PC itself.

There is also the fact that this CPU opens four more channels of DDR5 6400 at 2TB, meaning that there is double the memory bandwidth available for extreme processes like AI training, rendering, or things like scientific computation.

Sounds like a lot, right? Well it is. There is even more with an increased number of PCIe lanes (more GPU space, more power), a whole new motherboard type specifically for the Pro series called the WRX90 (lots of memory), and an increase in performance of about 18.1% (Aggregate Benchmark).

Special Pro Features

While the specs differences are cool, like in the past series, the Pro variant has its own special features.

These features include things like AMD's Memory Guard, Security, Manageability, and Business Ready which are all essential for IT, medical, and secure industries.

Each of these were created for things like encryption, security and manageablility features, and software/driver support and are essential when handling touchy information.

Overall

These CPUs open the doors for the highest level of computation and memory and are perfect for any workstation PC.

For over two times the price but an impressive suite of features at its highest, this CPU is meant for sensitive and fast information handling rather than PC gaming.

If you still want the secure Pro features but aren't as worried about the number of cores/threads or cache size, the models like the 9955WX are more affordable at $1,649 though it does have significantly lower specs.

If you are looking for a CPU at the pinnacle of workplace PCs, then you have reached the correct place, and you should spare no expense for your security and power.
