Reverse Motherboard Compatibility with CORSAIR Cases

Τελευταία ενημέρωση:

The introduction of reverse connector motherboards from GIGABYTE, MSI, and ASUS marked a welcome innovation in the PC industry. It simplified cable management, improved aesthetics, and made the building process easier.

Recognizing these benefits, we ensured that CORSAIR cases could take full advantage of this new standard. Additionally, any CORSAIR case compatible with reverse connector motherboards remains fully compatible with traditional motherboards too.

What is a "Reverse Motherboard"?

A reverse motherboard (sometimes called a back-connect motherboard) is one where the power and I/O connectors (things like USB headers and the like) have been moved to the rear of the board. This has no bearing on performance but makes the motherboard look nicer and improves the able management experience.

At time of writing, Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI make reverse motherboards with the names "Project Stealth", "BTF", and "Project Zero" respectively, but they all function basically identically.

To be clear, the term "reverse motherboard" is not connected to what people call an "inverted case" which refers to PC cases where the motherboard can or must be installed in a different orientation than the usual. We're talking about reverse motherboards today.

Pros and Cons of Reverse Motherboards

As with everything to do with PC gaming, there are tradeoffs. Here's a quick rundown of the benefits and drawbacks of reverse motherboards.

Pros:

  • Easier to cable manage
  • Better looks
  • Big GPUs won't block any connecters

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Fewer choices
  • Harder to find
  • Not all cases support reverse motherboards

How do we Make our Cases Compatible with Reverse Connector Motherboards?

Simply put, we punch additional holes into the motherboard tray that match up with where the connectors are positioned on these motherboards.

However, MSI Project Zero, GIGABYTE Project Stealth, and ASUS BTF each use slightly different connector positions. This means that a case designed to work with just one of these standards will not necessarily work with the others.

When we first added reverse motherboard compatibility to our cases, we only supported MSI Project Zero and ASUS BTF, but that's no longer the case.

All reverse motherboard compatible cases from CORSAIR are now validated to work with GIGABYTE Project Stealth, ASUS BTF, and MSI Project Zero.

Going forward, we will make reverse connector motherboard compatibility standard across all cases where possible to make our cases as versatile as possible for our end-users.

Does choosing a reverse connector motherboard change any other considerations when picking my parts list?

If you're going with a reverse connector motherboard, you must choose a case that supports reverse connector motherboards, and specifically the brand of reverse motherboard you've chosen.

Other component selection is completely unaffected. Reverse motherboards have identical support for the CPU, GPU, Cooler, PSU, RAM, fans, storage and everything else as regular motherboards.

If a case is compatible with reverse motherboards, does that mean it's incompatible with regular motherboards?

No. All reverse motherboard cases are also compatible with normal motherboards.

What about dual-chamber and triple-chamber PC cases?

Dual or triple-chamber cases are not inherently incompatible with reverse connector motherboards. In fact they are the more cohesive choice as, with the PSU moved
