Best PSU for RTX 5090

更新

The RTX 5090 has been around since January 2025 but has yet to be bettered and still stands as an absolute powerhouse of pixel-pushing prowess. If you want, or indeed need, the best GPU around, then nothing else comes close. Whether it’s for high-resolution, high-end gaming or more work-oriented tasks, such as rendering or AI shenanigans, this is the graphics card that dreams are made of.

It’s also a hungry beast when it comes to power draw. The RTX 5090 has a Total Design Power (TDP) of 575 watts, with transient spikes that can go all the way up to 900W, even if it’s just for a millisecond. You need plenty of headroom in your PSU’s wattage to get the most from this GPU, with a 1200W model being generally considered the sweet spot. A 1500W PSU is a good idea for beefier machines, while you can get away with a 1000W power supply depending on the rest of your spec. Our PSU calculator can help you if you’re unsure.

RTX 5090 System Requirements

  • PCIe 5.0 x16 slot (For best performance)
  • 1000W Power supply or greater.
  • PSU with a native 12V-2x6 connection OR 4x 8-pin PCIe connectors and adapter.

RTX 5090 Power Requirements

Given that the 5090 is the crown of NVIDIA’s lineup, the particularly indulgent 575W TGP is among the highest we’ve seen, though not high enough to cause a total panic. Luckily CORSAIR has a few options that can handle this absolute nugget with ease. Before we take a look at them though, there are a couple of new technologies that are worth considering.

PinProtect, PinProtect+, and ThermalProtect

If you did any research before finally getting your hands on an RTX 5090, then you were probably aware of some of the concerns surrounding the 12V-2x6 power connection. While these issues are relatively uncommon, we’ve developed a number of protection systems to help give you extra peace of mind and keep your graphics card in tip-top condition.

We now offer technologies such as PinProtect and PinProtect+ built into some of our PSUs, alongside newer releases such as the ThermalProtect 12V-2x6 cable, which actively monitors temperature to offer another layer of protection. You don’t absolutely need these, but given the price and rarity of RTX 5090 graphics cards, they offer some much-needed reassurance.

Best PSU for RTX 5090: CORSAIR HX1500i SHIFT

Yes, we know that the 5090’s power draw and a regular PC’s worth of components comes in way below 1500 Watts. However, given the 5090’s extreme price and power, it’s likely to become the centrepiece of totally overkill custom builds. Builds that require cases such as the 9000D, builds with dual watercooling loops, 20+ fans, multiple motherboards etc. That’s the stuff you’ll need a CORSAIR HX1500i SHIFT for. Plus, it’s 80 PLUS Platinum and Cybenetics Platinum certified. And of course, it comes with the all important 12V-2x6 cable that the 5090 needs.

Best 1200 Watt PSU for RTX 5090: CORSAIR RM1200e

The RMe series is noted for its efficient and reliable power delivery in a shorter than normal form factor. The RM1200eis the perfect wattage for a 5090, and at just 150mm long, it gives you more room for your cables at the business end of things. It also features PinProtect per-pin overcurrent protection, ensuring you not only get a quiet, Cybenetics Platinum-certified PSU, but can also enjoy the peace of mind that comes with advanced GPU protection.

Each pin of the PSU’s native 12V-2x6 connection is monitored in real time to ensure it isn’t operating outside of specification. If the current draw exceeds the threshold, PinProtect will step in and prevent the GPU from drawing excessive power, protecting the card from potential damage. It’s a valuable feature with next-generation GPUs, such as the RTX 5090, which are known to draw substantial power.

Best 1000W PSU for RTX 5090: CORSAIR RM1000x SHIFT

Yes, the other two options are fully modular, too, however, the RMx SHIFT lineup is always worth considering. In addition to the 80 PLUS and Cybenetics Gold certifications, Zero RPM mode, and 10 year warranty, it’s a SHIFT PSU.

This means that the cables connect on the side near the back of the motherboard tray, not the end opposite the power switch. This makes for easier building, cable management, and upgrading down the line.
