On the face of things, releasing a CPU based on an older architecture from 2023 may seem a bit of a strange move. But, it’s actually a welcome breath of fresh air. While this is the older Zen4 architecture, it brings with it some interesting quirks.
The Ryzen 7 7700X3D brings to the table an 8 core 16 thread CPU with first generation 96Mb L3 cache, so its no slouch in games and ticking the boxes for CPU requirements. AMD are trying aiming to complete the magical triangle of Cost, cooling and performance. A budget gaming CPU that doesn’t need the fastest RAM on the planet, the 3D V-Cache to boost gaming performance, and a low cooling requirement is very appealing
So, how does the new kid on the block stack up against it's next nearest competitor the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D? Announced by AMD at Computex 2026 promising to bring budget X3D CPU to the AM5 socket. The new 7700X3D joins the ever-growing line up of gaming focussed AMD CPUs. Which large amount of 3D V-Cache to improve gaming performance.

From the specs we can see the 7700X3D is really a slightly downclocked version of the 7800X3D. Beyond the clock speeds the rest of the CPU specification remains the same. Both sharing the same 8 core 16 thread X3D layout and 96MB L3 cache.
The 7800X3D is considered one of the best Zen 4 gaming CPUs, striking the balance between cost, performance, and cooling which has made it a favourite with budget conscious gamers. this puts the CPU in a great position as it shares all the core features, but with a slightly reduced clock speed.
Commonly with CPUs, the higher numbers equate to higher performance, but you may have noticed from the specification above, it’s not a huge gap between the two. With the 7800X3D having a slight edge in both clock speed and boost frequency (200mhz base clock and 500mhz boost clock), overall, that is going to make a small difference, but only about 5% in gaming depending on your setup.
This really is not a surprise as what we have is essentially a slightly downclocked Ryzen 7 7800X3D, so we see the same Zen 4 architecture 5nm process and the single CCD (Core Complex Die) setup as the 7800X3D.
This also means the Stacked V-cache is on top of the CCD as opposed to Zen5 CPUs where it is below. This is why you often see Zen 4 X3D CPUs with lower clock speeds as the V-Cache doesn’t like getting too hot. With Zen 5 this was moved below the CCD which largely solved that issue.
If your focus is gaming, this is a very good wallet friendly CPU. It’s not going to set any records, but AMD did not aim for it too.
This is designed as a good entry point CPU for a new gaming PC or to provide an upgrade path to someone who is wanting to boost their gaming performance. If your focus is on gaming, this is a good CPU to add to your shortlist. That said, if your focus is more to productivity and creativity, you may want to look at a non-X3D CPU or an Intel Core Ultra 270K as these generally perform better.
Both CPUs have a TDP of 120W which makes then very easy to cool. Which is great and helps lean into the idea of this being a budget gaming CPU. It means you don’t need a massive cooler, a 240mm or 280mm AIO such as our NAUTILUS 240 RS or iCUE LINK TITAN RX 240 is perfect for this.
Of course, there is nothing stopping you from fitting a 360mm AIO if you have the space but given the heat output of the CPU you will not see much in terms of temperature drops.
What you will notice however is the fans will run quieter as they will be spinning more slowly, and if your case supports a 360mm, it's worth going for it.
The burning question though, is it worth it? The overall answer is maybe. Which is not overly helpful because pricing is the problem. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is in some cases $20 more at time of writing, which is very tempting
Despite this the CPU does make a case for it as a wallet friendly upgrade, or a starter gaming PC. We mentioned earlier AMD dropped the price shortly after release, meaning there is the possibility it could come down again in the near future, if so it would be a very appealing option as a gaming CPU.
