The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition is the latest and greatest processor from Team Red. Building on the previous Ryzen 9 9950X3D, it features a modified and enlarged implementation of AMD's 3D V-Cache technology. It costs a pretty penny, but it looks set to be the best CPU for gamers who also need serious productivity performance. Let’s take a look.

The main point of note is the L3 cache, which is 50% larger than the regular 9950X3D, increasing to 192 MB for a total of 208 MB. This also marks the first use of what AMD is calling its “2nd Gen AMD 3D V-Cache Technology.”
Unlike previous 3D V-Cache CPUs, the cache is no longer stacked above the processor cores. Instead, it now sits underneath them. This means it is no longer positioned between the cores and the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS), which is the metal top of the CPU where thermal paste is applied. You can see a visualization of this arrangement below.
As a result, the cores, which generate most of the heat, now interface directly with the IHS. This provides a more direct path for heat to reach the cooler, allowing it to be dissipated more efficiently rather than passing through the cache first.
The X3D CPUs made a name for themselves as the best of the best when it comes to gaming performance due to the 3D V-Cache technology. In general, the larger the cache, the better your games will perform. This is because the cache is the fastest storage in the entire system, and the more of the game’s files can be stored here, the quicker the CPU can access them, and the smoother the experience will be.
This is particularly handy for open world games. As these games dynamically load and unload the environment depending on where you are, being able to stash more of that data close to the CPU means that you experience less hitching and stuttering as you move throughout the world.
You may have noticed that the 9950X3D2 has a 200W TDP which is 30W higher than the previous 9950X3D. This means that it will require a more capable cooling solution. In fact, AMD has recommended a 360mm AIO for this CPU, whereas the 9950X3D called for just a 240mm. Luckily for you, CORSAIR has a broad range of 360mm AIOs perfect for the 9950X3D2. Dual Edition refers to how the 3D V-Cache is present underneath both of the CCDs (CCDs being clusters of cores, in this case, two clusters of eight cores). This allows for more physical room, thus leading to a larger cache.
The 9950X3D2 will be available worldwide on April 22nd at 9am EST (3pm CET, 2pm GMT). This means that not only will you be able to buy the CPU on its own, but pre-built PCs featuring the 9950X3D2 will be available, too.
The MSRP of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition is $899. However, this is just the MSRP, so the price at retailers could vary but probably not by much. What certainly will vary is regional pricing. You cannot just convert $899 to whatever your currency is and assume that will be the price where you are and we haven’t yet seen confirmed MSRPs for the UK, Mainland Europe, or anywhere else.
