How to Clean a Monitor

Monitors are a long-term investment and aren't typically replaced as frequently as the rest of your gaming setup. PC components, keyboards, mice, and headsets are replaced on a more regular basis compared to monitors.

As a result of the monitor being dormant as a part of your gaming setup for an extended period of time, you can imagine it'll accumulate dust and debris. Keeping it clean should therefore form a regular part of your setup's maintenance.

Cleaning Supplies

To properly clean your monitor and avoid any mishaps such as damage, you'll need the following:

  • A microfiber cloth that is clear of any debris such as dirt or lint (Just use a fresh one each time to be safe)
  • Cleaning solution specifically for screens or purified water.

If you treasure your monitor, you'll want to absolutely avoid the following:

  • Tap water as they tend to leave streaks behind due to mineral deposits
  • Alcohol-based solutions such as isopropyl alcohol, as they can devastate anti-glare coatings or color filters
  • Ammonia-based cleaners such as Windex, as ammonia can also potentially devastate your monitor's coating
  • Paper towels, tissues, or any other wipes with abrasive materials as they can scratch the screen

Cleaning Method

  1. Power off your monitor as it'll be easier to have visibility over the smudges and dust on your screen.
  2. In light, circular motions, use your microfiber cloth to gently wipe away dust from your screen. If there is a tag on your microfiber cloth, it is worth noting to remove that tag (or at least tuck it away) to avoid it from making contact with your screen, as even that may cause a scratch.
  3. Once most or all of the dust is swept away, you may spray the screen cleaning solution onto your microfiber cloth - NOT directly on the monitor. Spray a suitable amount of the solution on the microfiber where it is damp, but not too generously where the cloth is soaking wet.
  4. Using the same light, circular motions as before - wipe away any smudges on your screen. If there is a stubborn piece of debris on your screen, continue the motion with a clean, damp part of the towel over the affected area until it clears. DO NOT attempt to scratch it off or increase the amount of pressure utilized while wiping, as you may damage the screen.
