What Is Tap Lock?

Last updated:

Tap Lock is a Hall Effect keyboard feature that converts any key’s hold action into a toggle. Rather than requiring continuous physical pressure to maintain an input, a single tap activates the action and keeps it active until a second tap on the same key deactivates it.

Tap Lock is built around three keyboard behaviors:

1) Tap to toggle action ON

2) Tap to toggle action OFF

3) Hold

The hold behavior is an important aspect of the feature's design. Keys configured with Tap Lock are not exclusively toggle-only, they keep their standard hold behavior. This means a key can still be used normally when needed, while the toggle behavior is available as the primary action.

How Tap Lock Differs from a Standard Key

For a standard key, maintaining a hold action requires constant physical pressure for the entire duration the action is active. In practice, this means holding down a key for seconds or even minutes at a time depending on the game scenario. Over extended sessions, this creates cumulative strain on the fingers, which can lead to fatigue.

Tap Lock removes the physical requirement of holding down a key entirely. Once a key is toggled on, the keyboard maintains the action continuously without any additional input. The finger is then free to release, move, or engage with other keys immediately after activation.

Setting Up Tap Lock in CORSAIR Web Hub

Tap Lock is configured through CORSAIR Web Hub, which runs entirely in a browser without any additional software. The setup process follows a consistent pattern:

Step 1 — Select the Target Key

Open Web Hub and navigate to Tap Lock. Select the key that will be set with Tap Lock.

Step 2 — Assign the Toggle Action

Press the selected key and confirm the assignment by saving. After Web Hub saves and reloads, an icon will appear on the key in the layout view, confirming that Tap Lock has been successfully applied. To remove Tap Lock, repeat the process and the icon will be cleared from the key.

Step 3 — Perform Key Tests

After configuring Tap Lock, navigate to the Key Testing tab to verify the assignment. Pressing the key once will toggle it on and the key will appear in the Pressed Key section. Pressing it again will toggle it off, and the key will briefly appear in the Released Key section. To test the hold behavior, press and hold the key and it will appear in the Pressed Key section for as long as it is held and move to the Released Key section once released.

Configuration Example

The following example shows how Tap Lock can be applied to common gaming scenarios, like moving forward.

Target key: W (Moving Forward)
Input Behavior
First tap Activates toggle — character starts to move forward continusouly
Second tap Deactivates toggle — character stops moving
Hold Hold – character moves forward for as long as the key held

In this configuration, pressing W once starts moving forward continuous, where a second tap will stop moving. Holding W performs the standard move forward behavior for the duration of the hold.

Why Use Tap Lock?

Tap Lock is part of CORSAIR's new suite of advanced Hall Effect features, and like the others, it expands what a keyboard is capable of beyond its standard functionality. With Tap Lock, there is no longer a need to physically hold down a key for extended periods of time. Being able to tap a key to toggle a continuous action reduces strain on the fingertips and frees the hand for other inputs. Not having to continuously hold the Shift key or a movement key, for example, opens opportunities for more precise and responsive ability usage.

Overall, Tap Lock is a straightforward configuration change available on the CLIPPER PRO MINI 60 and VANGUARD PRO 96. It takes only a few seconds to set up in CORSAIR Web Hub and offers a meaningful improvement in both comfort and execution during extended gaming sessions.
