Saving Netflix Videos Using PlayLater

By Bill Rathbone, on October 31, 2013

Watching streaming video from Netflix, Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus and other services can be great. Being able to save those videos for later playback - using Voyager Air, of course - makes them even greater.

A program called PlayLater (their website is here ) lets you do just that, recording streamed video in tablet-friendly .mp4 format for later playback.

It’s not free – right now it costs $19.99 per year, or $39.99 for a lifetime license. You can only record videos on premium services like Netflix if you have a subscription to that service. It won’t record high-definition video. And the user experience is a bit clunky (starting with the fact that the recording happens in real time, like with a DVR or VCR).

But PlayLater works. And as a parent looking for video content for young kids, especially kids who like to watch the same things over and over, it is well worth the cost.

This first screen shows some of the various “Channels” available using PlayLater.

This screen shows the experience of browsing through available videos and selecting shows to record.

Netflix has some great original content, like “Orange is the New Black” and “House of Cards.” It also has a lot of great kid videos (my son recently had me record the first season of “Digimon” for him).

With PlayLater, you can save those shows for later viewing – using the Voyager Air, of course.
