What does "Smart Power Supply" mean?

Often undervalued, the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is essential for your PC's reliability and performance. Without a reliable PSU, even the best components can fail. The PSU acts as the heart of your computer, supplying power to every component. A faulty PSU can cause system instability, crashes, and hardware damage. Choosing a CORSAIR PSU guarantees your system receives clean, stable power, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. These PSUs are compatible with CORSAIR's iCUE software, classifying them as smart PSUs due to their advanced monitoring and customization capabilities. This includes features like real-time efficiency tracking, load regulation, and temperature monitoring. They contain sensors, microcontrollers, and communication functions that allow them to adjust their output according to the needs of connected devices, safeguard against power surges or overloads, and provide real-time data on voltage, current, temperature, and efficiency.

These CORSAIR PSU Series are labeled with an “i” on their model name, denoting iCUE compatibility. This feature distinguishes them from the rest of the CORSAIR PSU series, as they can be customized via iCUE Software, making them an ideal choice for those seeking reliability, performance, and versatility in their power supply unit.

What can a Smart PSU do?

Here are some examples of what you can do with CORSAIR Smart PSUs in iCUE. In this setup, we are using a CORSAIR HXi 1200W power supply unit.

When you open the iCUE software, on the main home screen, you will see the CORSAIR HXi icon. When selected, you have two options to choose from: Cooling and Alerts.

COOLING

A standard power supply unit (PSU) with a conventional cooling fan is generally managed by the PSU itself. This control causes the fan’s RPM to fluctuate based on the voltage supplied, which correlates with the PSU’s internal temperature. This allows the fan to run at a lower speed when the PSU is not under heavy load and to increase speed as needed to keep the PSU cool.

A smart PSU, on the other hand, such as the CORSAIR HXi, offers users control over how they want their PSU fan to operate. You can either run it on preset settings or fully control the fan’s RPM based on the application you are running.

Additionally, as shown in the image above, you can monitor the PSU’s power output and input, including its efficiency and voltage/current across the 12V, 5V, and 3V rails. This way, you can be confident that your PSU is operating within acceptable specifications.

ALERTS

A smart PSU's ability to self-protect and notify users of issues such as unexpected power surges, high internal temperatures, or voltage spikes is another valuable feature. Users receive alerts about potential issues, such as overheating or irregular power, enabling them to perform proactive troubleshooting. This technology not only improves system reliability but also optimizes energy efficiency and prolongs the lifespan of components.
