With so many video game genres popping up all over the gaming scene, I’m sure some of you are having a hard time keeping track of what these acronyms really mean. Here are some popular examples I’m sure you have seen thrown around:
Cyberpunk 2077
The Outer Worlds 2
From these main genres, various gameplay modes or design structures determine how you play or interact with the game world and other players. Currently, three major gameplay modes are widely popular across different genres. Sorry for including more acronyms here, but they’re pretty easy to remember: PvP, PvE, and the newest, PvPvE.
PvP stands for Player versus Player, which, by definition, is pretty straightforward. It simply means players can attack and compete with one another in direct combat. Then you have PvE, which is short for Player versus Environment. Like PvP, the concept is explicitly laid out. The player is meant to play against the game or NPCs (non-playable characters) as part of game progression. Now, for the newest kid on the block, which is gaining a lot of traction in gaming communities, is PvPvE, meaning Player versus Player versus Environment. I know it’s a bit of a mouthful, but at its core, the main concept is the combination of PvP and PvE. A prime example of this gaming mode is ARC Raiders and Escape from Tarkov.
ARC Raiders
Escape From Tarkov
This gaming mode is quickly gaining popularity because of its unpredictable nature, which keeps you on your toes. You need to stay alert since other players can attack you at any moment while you’re also dealing with in-game element threats. For many PvPvE players, this format really tests their skills, tactical strategy, and split-second decision-making, as they have to outsmart their opponents and stay a step ahead. In this format, players not only face off against each other but also deal with environmental challenges and AI-controlled enemies, interact with NPCs, and take on quests and missions, creating a more structured, often story-driven experience.
This hybrid approach really sparks strategic thinking, inviting players to enjoy the thrill of balancing the challenge of beating AI enemies with the challenge of defending against or attacking other players. It creates a lively, engaging gameplay experience that appeals to a broad range of players, giving them the best of both worlds.
Although PvPvE is still a relatively new concept in gaming, the success of these types of games shows that they are likely to grow even more popular in the future. Many gamers see PvP and PvE as core elements of multiplayer games, but when combined, they create an exciting new experience. This blend fosters a sense of camaraderie among players or, at times, some friendly tension that can even lead to moments of betrayal. This dynamic makes the game more special and keeps players genuinely engaged.
