Controller vs Mouse and Keyboard: Which is Better?

One of the oldest debates in gaming attempts to answer the question of how we interact with the games we play. Is it better to use a controller for perhaps a more streamlined experience, or should we be pursuing the ultimate in customization that is offered by the keyboard and mouse?

The answer, as with most ongoing debates such as this one, is that it depends.

And thankfully, you can’t go wrong. Whatever is most comfortable to you, or whatever allows you to dive into the gaming session with ease, is ultimately what’s best.

For me, the split between controller vs mouse and keyboard is along the axis of precision. In other words, where do I need the most precision in my inputs? Is the precision of movement more important, or is precision of camera/pointer what matters most?

For games that require more precise inputs for movement, consider giving a controller a try! This would include action-adventure, racing, hack-n-slash, and fighting, among many other genres of games.

Essentially, if the left analog stick of a controller and/or WASD on a keyboard are used primarily and the right analog stick or mouse would be secondary, then a controller might be the best input method for that game.

Think of trying to dungeon crawl or drive a car with WASD. Not exactly ideal, is it? The added precision of an analog stick can be very useful here.

On the flip side, if a game requires more precise inputs for controlling the camera or a pointer, keyboard and mouse might be the way to go! Games falling into this category would include shooters, tactical games, and simulation games.

These are the games that, when playing on PC, use the mouse to control a pointer or precise camera movements. The added level of control and finesse offered by a mouse for these games can often give much a much more enjoyable experience.

As mentioned at the beginning, none of these are hard and fast rules; at the end of the day we all have our preferences and there is no wrong way to game! Many people have spent years playing shooters on console so using a controller feels more natural for them, and others are deeply ingrained in the mouse and keyboard world so prefer that for basically everything.
