What to look for in a PC case fan
At first glance, a case fan may seem like quite a simple PC component. There are several aspects to consider, however.
- Size: At either 120mm or 140mm, there’s a fan that’ll fit your case’s slots.
- Bearing type: Choose between hydraulic and magnetic levitation bearings.
- LED support: There are RGB fans, single color fans, and even fans with no RGB to keep things toned down.
What’s the purpose of a PC case fan and why do you need it?
A computer’s power supply typically comes with its own cooling fan. Your graphics card likely has its own cooling mechanism. You may have even opted for a CPU cooler for your chip slot. So what’s the point of a case fan?
In general, the above component-specific fans are tuned specifically to keep the localized temperature swings of those components at bay. But those fans can only push that heat so far away, so a case fan is an important addition to keep air circulating in and out of your entire case, more globally.
Many cases even come with their own fans, but it is often a good idea to fill some extra slots with additional fans to keep airflow moving.
