What to look for in Computer RAM
Here’s what to consider when shopping for RAM modules:
- Memory size: Available as single sticks (4GB–48GB) or in kits (e.g., 2×16GB, 2×32GB). In general, more RAM improves performance for demanding tasks.
- Generation: DDR3 and DDR4 are older standards that may still be useful depending on your system. For the best speeds, efficiency, and future compatibility, choose DDR5.
- Tested speed: RAM is rated for a specific tested speed (e.g., 6000 MHz). Make sure your motherboard and CPU can support that speed; otherwise, it will run at a lower default setting.
- Voltage and compatibility: Dial in the right voltage for your system, and be sure to filter by PC, Mac, and Laptop footprints.
- Design: If you like visual flair, consider RAM modules with RGB lighting that complement your build’s look.
How much RAM does a gaming PC need?
How much RAM is “enough”? Your processor and your graphics card play just as much of a role in how well your system can keep up with your gaming and productivity needs. With that said, more RAM is typically better for “future-proofing” your system. Most average gamers will be satisfied with 16GB right now, but as games get more demanding, 32GB will become more standard. 8GB will work in a pinch, but you’ll feel that churn in heavy video rendering situations.
